Gibson have finished the final 10 in their series of top guitar riffs, but should all of these be in the list? Are they all genuine riffs?: ~! ` @0 V$ I3 x$ g$ H
0 z# I4 Y" `: A ?7 v* S8 kHere in the Hitsquad / GuitarSite.com office, we had a bit of a discussion on what really constitutes a riff. Should a mostly chord based thing be a riff or should it only be counted if it's mostly notes (melodic doesn't seem to be the right word here)? And should it be played lower on the fretboard for extra grunt? 9 D! E" W+ W, V* H! t: _ ! `- l/ i/ x: @7 yFor example, 'Sunshine of Your Love' is what we consider to embody the best in what aught to be considered a riff. While on the other hand, 'Sweet Child O’ Mine' is too far up the fretboard and should be more thought of as a lead rather than a riff. & T- |0 q( U5 C! z" N& `9 c& z3 T! J7 c5 f, k, f/ [
